PhotoHunt#62 Bags

These are my new bags. They are spacious, sturdy, colorful and pretty. It is locally called bayong and can be used anywhere. I bought them last month from a trade fair. I love their colors and decided to buy two of them. The bags are environment friendly because like a lot of Philippine bags, they were handwoven and the materials used were indigenously made from plant stems and leaves.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is assisting cooperatives and associations mostly from the rural or countryside areas thru their livelihood programs. These bags are some of the products being made by these groups. The government agency is linking the producers and buyers of these products thru trade fairs, and other business events.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It

If you have not yet seen Michael Jackson’s This Is It, better watch it now. You won’t get disappointed.

I went to watch Michael Jackson’s This Is It tonight and as expected, the King of Pop did not fail to amaze me. The signature moves were still there and I can’t believe that he’s already 50. Amazed and awed, that was what I felt while watching the last days of Michael Jackson practicing his moves and his songs. He kept pace with his backup dancers half his age. He ruled the stage and knew his cues. His genius is quite apparent in the movie. The more I watched, the more I felt sad that it was his last hurrah. His death is really such a big loss. I am truly grateful that this documentary, which was meant for his personal use, is being shown now. He could have given his audience a grand adventure if only This Is It had gone on as planned.

Hurting Knuckles

My knuckles still hurt; specifically, the right hand, middle finger knuckles. I stopped my boxing for almost a month and just did group exercise. I did a little of shadowbox last week and tried to get back to doing the punch mitts yesterday. But, arrrrghh..my knuckles hurt. We tried to adjust my handwrap thinking it would help and yet, they still hurt. After three rounds of punchmitt punching, I gave up. The skin looked so red after pulling all out the handwrap. The trainor said it commonly happens for the hard punchers. Right. Now, am worrying if I should go to the doctor and see what is wrong with these knuckles. Meantime, I am forced to slow down again in my boxing. Sigh! I am going to miss it.

Litratong Pinoy#73 Amoy (Smell)

The moment we went out of the Sydney airport, the smell of the pines met us. The air smelled so fresh in Sydney, it was something really surprising and new for us who came from Manila.

Pilipino:

Sydney Opera House,Sydney,AustraliaAlign Center
It was a far cry comparing it upon going out of the Manila airport because smell of exhaust smokes can be smelled in the streets of Manila. It is because there are still places in Sydney that has a lot of trees and these trees can clean the polluted air produced by factories and vehicles. While in Manila, it seems cutting trees is the norm and this is without regard to the effect to the environment and health of the people.

Pilipino:

This is Hyde Park which is located in the business district of Sydney and it is just beside the St. James Church.

Pilipino:

Forgetting My Own Mother Tongue

Filipino is my mother tongue. While I live in a multilingual family as is common in any Filipino family, my parents’ common language is Tagalog or Filipino and I grew up using it as my first language. Tagalog or Filipino language is my parents' way of meeting halfway in their communications with each other as they both came from different parts of the country.

You would imagine that I would be quite proficient with the national language, Filipino. Wrong. As I grew older, I got more comfortable talking in Bisaya or the Visayan language mixed in with some Tagalog words and would tend to write in English more than in Filipino or Bisaya.

This confusing use of several languages however did not do me much good last week. In fact, I felt mortified.

A client wrote us a letter using our Filipino language and I was tasked to draft the reply for it, which should also be done in Filipino. It took me thrice the time to finalize my draft. In fact, I had to stop from time to time and do research for the words that I was not sure about, and there were lots of them. It took me almost a week to edit the whole letter that was actually just about 100-150 words for any wrong grammar and punctuations. The letter was no novel, but I felt like I was about to go on nosebleeding episodes trying to finish it in full Filipino language.

That was when I realized that I am on the brink of forgetting my mother tongue while I was busy trying to hone my English skills with reading, writing and blogging.

How can I call myself a true Filipino if I could barely finish a letter in my own mother tongue? This is why I promised to myself that I should improve my usage of my mother tongue. Not for anybody, but for myself. If I cannot talk in Filipino, I shall try to improve my writing in Filipino. I used to read a lot of Tagalog komiks before but got tired of it. It is quite rare to see them now but there are a lot of Tagalog pocketbooks in bookstores, I shall start with those. If any of you can recommend any reading materials, short of advising me to get back to school, feel free to share your recommendations.

Ruby Tuesday#22 Sunset at CAMSUR Watersports Complex

The place looked like it came right out of a beautiful painting with blazing reds, oranges and yellows casting over the waters and the wakeboard ramp at Camarines Sur (CAMSUR) Watersports Complex. I was gawking for a few moments until I realized that I had to take some pictures before darkness took over and it would be all lost to memory.

Music Monday#26 Gloria Estefan's Con Los Años Que Me Quedan

I first heard of this song in our group exercise class one day. One of the group exercise teachers used this as his cool down music in the class and I find this quite beautiful even if I could barely understood the words. Anyway, thanks to youtube and some research, I now got the lyrics and the music video of this song. Take it away, Gloria Estefan.

credit: youtube,alfocito

By the way, for the English translation of the song, just scroll down..

No quise herirte, mi amor
Sabes que eres mi adoración
Y lo serás mi vida entera

No puedo imaginar vivir sin ti
No quiero recordar como te perdí
Quizás fue inmadurez de mi parte
No te supe querer

{Primer verso}

With The Years That I Have Left

I know that I still have an opportunity left
I know that it is still not too late to reflect
I know that our love is real
With the years that I have left to live
I will show how much I love you

With the years that I have left,
I will live to give you love.
Erasing every pain
With kisses full of passion,
like I loved you the first time

With the years that I have left,
I will make you forget any mistake.
I did not want to hurt you my love
You know that I adore you (lit: you are my adoration)
And you will be my entire life

I cannot imagine living without you
I do not want to remember how I lost you
Probably it was immaturity on my part
I did not know how to love you
I assure you that the years that I have left
I am going to dedicate them to you
To making to you so happy
That you fall more in love with me
I will love you until I die

How to prove that I am not who I was
Time will tell, if you have faith in me
Nobody
Will ever be able to love you more
Than I will (love you).
Tell me that it is not the end

{First verse}

I know that our love is real
And with the years that I have left for living
I will show how much I love you
How much I love you

Efren Penaflorida: Pinoy CNN Hero

A hero need not come in cape while flying fast to his destination. He may come in with a pushcart laden with school supplies, chairs and tables. He may not save people from physical danger but he sure can save them from illiteracy and offer a way out of poverty. This is our Pinoy hero, Efren Penaflorida.

For children who live in slums, poverty is just a way of life. Illiteracy comes with it and it becomes a cycle if they cannot get out of the quicksand of nothingness.

Efren Penaflorida knew this as he was one of them before but he was different. He worked hard to get to school and better yet, he worked hard to impart what he has learned.

Because children of poverty can barely come to school for a myriad of basic reasons such as they do not have food in their stomachs or they do not have slippers to wear to get to school, alot of them end up being drug addicts, gang members, bums and thieves. So, Efren decided to help by using his pushcart along with his volunteer-teachers and went around the slums teaching the children.

Because of his work along with his Dynamic Teen Company, Efren Penaflorida is now one of the nominees for the CNN Heroes. Please vote for him and let us be proud that he is our Pinoy CNN Hero. His win could also help more slum children to get out of the slums and have a better education.

Litratong Pinoy#72 Masinop (Frugal)

The frugality, industriousness and organized ways of the Batanes people or Ivatans are very obvious in their whole surroundings.

Pilipino:
I saw their quiet, hardworking, simple ways of life and good character when we took a vacation in Batanes.

Pilipino:

And I was really impressed with their clean and cemented roads that they actually reached the mountainous and far flung areas. Their frugality are easily seen anywhere and it seems that their officials are really doing their job, right?

Pilipino:

Ruby Tuesday#21 Travel By Boat to Caramoan

There are two ways to travel to Caramoan Peninsula, Camarines Sur from the town of Sabang. Travel by land for about 4-6 hours (mostly dirt road) or travel by boat for about 2 hours. We chose the boat but we were about to get wet. So, here comes the "kargador" (stevedore) who all wore red, by the way. They can carry your things for you or they can carry you too by P20.00 per person. You can choose to sit on one shoulder or you can actually ride on his neck LOL! Me? I chose to wade and get in the water, not my travel companion though. She chose to be carried LOL!

Photo Hunt#60 My Favorite Fruit, Durian

Photo Hunt is having a free theme this week. So, I decided to show my favorite fruit that is described as "smells like hell, tastes like heaven", the durian.

Davao City is known for having a lot of fruits all year round but the city is more known for its malodorous fruit, durian. For a local like me, I actually find the durian smell heady and enticing; not surprising as it is known as an aphrodisiac.

It used to be that having this fruit is considered burgoise or burgis as it was really expensive at P120-P150 per kilo including its shell that only the rich can really afford to buy it. It was also only easily available during the months of August until October.

Thanks to science, propagation of the fruit has become easier and it is now available all-year round. Traditionally though, its harvest peak is still on the months of August up to October.

This year has been touted with the highest yield which brought the durian prices down to P15-P20 for the varieties of native, Puyat and Arancillo in the month of September alone. Ubiquitous durian carts can be seen in every corner of the city and the low prices made the durian quite affordable even to the most ordinary Juan and Maria.

There are several durian varieties available such as the native variety, Arancillo, Puyat, Montong, Cobb and Chani but the most popular are the first three varieties mentioned. Personally, am a native variety fan with its bittersweet taste, sticky and creamy durian meat. I could actually eat the whole regular sized native durian fruit if I want to.

As the harvest is getting leaner this month of October, the prices of durian per kilo is now at P35-40 per kilo.

Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change

A friend emailed this to me and it is just so timely for Blog Action Day’s topic for today. The onslaught of typhoons Ondong (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) should be a stern wake-up call for all Filipinos and actions should be undertaken right this moment, otherwise, the loss of more properties and lives shall shake not only the lives of the Filipino people but also the nation as a whole as well.

CLIMATE CHANGE: IS THE PHILIPPINES READY FOR IT?

By Henrylito D. Tacio

When it learned of the findings of United States- based physicist Dr. Josefino Comiso that climate change and the melting of polar ice caps in the Arctic region can lead to the flooding of Manila, the Malacañang branded it as "doomsday scenario."

During a recent conference held at the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Dr. Comiso said the Philippines is not spared from the destruction that will likely to happen as a result of global warming.

Dr. Comiso, a senior research scientist at the Cryospheric Sciences branch of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Goddard Space Flight Center, a space research laboratory in Greenbelt, Maryland, is working on a project to monitor the effects of global warming in the Philippines.

He said the country's sea levels could rise to seven meters or 23 feet. He knows what he is talking about. He has a 25-year-long research on climate change, which has taken him to the Arctic and whose paper correctly predicted the decline of polar ice caps.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of 2,000 scientists (including Dr. Comiso) which advises the United Nations, said the rising of sea level is one of the most certain outcomes as a result of global warming.

"A continuing rise in average global sea level would inundate parts of many heavily populated river deltas and the cities on them, making them uninhabitable, and would destroy many beaches around the world," the UN panel said.

With a coastline of 18,000 kilometers, the Philippines is very vulnerable to sea level rise. Since 1965, the government weather bureau reported of "an increasing trend in the sea level rise."

This has been supported by a study conducted by Greenpeace, an international environment watch group. In a report titled, The Philippines: A Climate Hotspot, it said that all of the country's 16 regions are vulnerable to the one-meter rise in sea level that is projected to happen in 2300 and onwards.

An increase in sea level, for instance, would accelerate flooding in the northwest delta plain of the Manila Bay, which is experiencing subsidence (or sinking of land) at an alarming rate of three centimeters a year.

A study conducted by the Philippine Country Study to Address Climate Change found that the Manila Bay is already subjected to several hazards, including flooding and storms. "Shoreline changes due to reclamation for housing, ports, coastal roads, buildings and other urbanized development are high, adding to an increased threat of inundation," the study said.

Sulu is the province with the highest land area that is highly vulnerable to the sea-level rise. In this southern Philippines province, 90 percent of the land area of Pata municipality, and 34 percent of the land area of Marunggas municipality are vulnerable to the rise, according to the group.

Aside from Sulu, the other provinces vulnerable to sea level rise are Palawan, Zamboanga del Sur, Northern Samar, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan, Cebu, Davao del Norte, Bohol, Camarines Sur, Quezon, Tawi-Tawi, Masbate, Negros Occidental, Camarines Norte, Capiz, Catanduanes, Samar, Zamboanga del Norte, and Maguindanao.

"Not only will great numbers of our people be displaced, entire communities including their source of livelihood, their cultures and traditions will likewise be changed and dislocated forever," deplored Heherson T. Alvarez, the convening chairman of the Asia-Pacific Leaders' Conference on Climate Change held in Manila in 1995.

"The Philippines is extremely vulnerable to the ravages of climate change," the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) said. Dr. Comiso pointed out that slight changes in ocean temperature will definitely affect the country's coral reefs.

Increased temperature is one stressor that can cause "the tropical rainforests of the sea" to bleach, which in turn diminish their growth and threaten critical habitat for fish and other marine resources.

"An increase of one to two degrees Centigrade can cause corals to bleach, as they expel the algae that provide them with food and lend them their vibrant colors," explained Molly O'Meara, a staff researcher at the Washington-based Worldwatch Institute. "Sustained increase of 3-4 degrees Centigrade can cause significant coral death."

In the Philippines, an estimated 10-15 per cent of the total fisheries come from coral reefs. "Coral reef fish yields range from 20 to 25 metric tons per square kilometer per year for healthy reefs," says Dr. Angel C. Alcala, former environment secretary.

According to the international marine watchdog group Reef Check, fish species are already starting to disappear from Philippine waters as delicate coral reefs, some of the biggest in the world, are destroyed in the archipelago. In a report last year, the group said coral reefs were already suffering from severe bleaching.

Increasing sea level rise would endanger the drinking water quality and agricultural productivity, weather specialist Rosa Perez said. This is due to possible salt intrusion in coastal soils and fresh water aquifers.

Using simulation in climate change, a PAGASA team has found that the water supply from both Angat Dam in Luzon and Lake Lanao in Mindanao would be at a serious deficit by 2050. Angat Dam supplies most of the water requirements of Metro Manila and irrigates 28,000 hectares of farms. Lake Lanao account for 90 percent of the total hydropower of Mindanao and serves domestic and irrigation water needs as well.

Climate change also threatens the wildlife species. "If climate zones shift, existing national parks or protected areas would no longer preserve the habitat for plants, fish and wildlife for which they were established, " noted Lulu Bucay in a primer circulated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. "Few forests, for instance, could keep up with the predicted temperature change causing hard consequences on the species that depend on them."

As Dr. Comiso puts it, rising temperatures could reach a point where "various living creatures" would start to die in large numbers. "Such temperatures would vary from species to species," he said. "But the deaths of these creatures would gravely affect the food supply chain."

Another consequence: spread of diseases. Greenpeace Philippines said climate change could amplify the proliferation and transmission of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever because of changes in water distribution, rising temperature and the increase of microorganisms.

"Global climate change will have diverse, escalating impacts on human health," said Tony McMichael, a professor at Australia's National University, who launched an international effort to study global environmental change and health.

Global warming refers to an increase in average global temperatures, which in turn cause climate change. "To completely understand why global warming happens, it is important to know that our atmosphere, which is made up of gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide as well as water vapor, has a profound influence on Earth's surface temperature, " explains the Worldwatch Institute.

Gases such as carbon dioxide and methane absorb heat, thus reducing the amount that escapes back to space. "As the atmosphere absorbs heat energy," Worldwatch notes, "it warms the oceans and the surface of the Earth. This process is called the greenhouse effect.
Without this effect, the Earth's atmosphere would average about 50 degrees Fahrenheit colder, making it impossible to sustain life on Earth. Rising levels of heat absorbing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will increase global temperatures (called global warming)."

"The consequence of global climate change are so pressing that it doesn't matter who was responsible for the past; what matters is who is responsible for the future – and that means all of us," declared actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California. "The rich nations and the poor nations have different responsibilities. But one responsibility we all have, and that is action… action, action, action!"

"The issue is not stopping global warming - this will almost certainly not be possible within most of our lifetimes," notes Worldwatch's Christopher Flavin. "Rather, the challenge is to slow the production of greenhouse gases immediately, so as to avoid the most sudden and catastrophic climate changes. If trends continue unabated, only radical, draconian measures would be sufficient to save the climate later on." -- ***

As individuals we can do our share in our own little ways. Some of these are:

· Minimize using the spinner/dryer when doing laundry, instead hang your laundry outside to dry.

· Minimize usage of plastics. As much as you can, recycle, recycle.

· Use airconditioners only when really necessary and instead, use electric fan or better yet, try it the natural way, open your windows and doors and let the air come in.

· When doing groceries, discourage the packer in using a lot of plastic bags or better yet, bring your own grocery bag.

· Make it a mission to plant more trees and be more active in participating in environmental projects like the coastline clean-up drive.

· Encourage others to do their share as much as you can and as always as you can.

· And lastly, the future generation’s quality of life is also at stake here. Teach them how to do their own share.

The list could go on and on but one thing is for sure, climate change is here now. We should do our share and we should think that tragic devastations in properties and lives caused by climate change never chose their victims. Anybody can be affected.

Litratong Pinoy#71 Maagap (Prompt)

Their faces looked serious with a hint of worry while they were waiting. It looked like they were looking at something. What was it?

Pilipino:
Mukhang meron silang tinitingnan. Ano kaya iyon?

Kkrrrreeekk! What was it? Where did it come from? It seemed like there was some breaking wood somewhere. There! It was a good thing that one of the guys who was looking on earlier was prompt and he was able to prevent the floaters from colliding. It seemed he cannot do it alone and thank goodness that there was someone who promptly helped him. If not, the floaters would have broken and it would have caused the delay of our departure.

Pilipino:
Kkrrrreeekk! Ano iyon? Saan ba galing iyon?

The pictures were taken at Guijalo Port, Caramoan Peninsula, Camarines Sur.

Ruby Tuesday#20 Reds In Dr. Jose Rizal's House

We went to visit our national hero's ancestral home in Calamba, Laguna, Luzon last August 2009. I was excited to be there as the house was always mentioned in our school books. We took some pictures, explored the house and its surrounding area, bought some souvenirs and I found some items worth for my Ruby Tuesday entries. Here they are:

The red tile roof of the ancestral home of Dr. Jose Rizal.

The medallions and coins owned by the Philippine national hero himself, Dr. Jose Rizal.

I found this lady on top of the ladies' comfort room door. She is wearing the traditional Maria Clara dress of the Spanish time and she is also carrying a hanky and a pretty fan.

Today we ripped this meme off a blogger and blog called Magical Mystery Tour. He's from the UK where they spell words strangely. As for this meme, he states who stole it but does not say from where. But, it was probably stolen there as well. So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft's thieves might take some time. Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Cheers to all us thieves!

Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

Obama's Nobel Peace Prize win came as no big surprise for me after reading his book, The Audacity of Hope. It can be gleaned in that book that the guy is serious about bringing together the American people beyond racial prejudices and beyond personal, selfish interests. He encourages better tolerance, keeping the peace but is not afraid to stand up against what's wrong. I was amazed at his conviction and belief that the American people can achieve peace and unity and subsequently, transcend these to the world.

I was actually wishing that if only our local politicians or so-called "statesmen" have half of Obama's conviction and belief in living side by side with other human beings peacefully, cooperating together to eradicate poverty and to improve the quality of education for the betterment of their lives, I think, my country would achieve its great potential.

Litratong Pinoy#70 Tamad(Lazy)

I remember what my mother used to remind me before..

"Do not be lazy and always be hardworking especially that you're still young. Even if the job is simple, even if you're just a stevedore. If you do it well, God will bless you and you'll have a good life some day."

Pilipino:

(Picture was taken at the port of Guijalo, Caramoan, Camarines Sur. These are the stevedores that carried sacks of rice from Sabang town.

Reminder that stayed in my mind until now, that always reminded me to work hard and to not be lazy. Reminder that taught me to respect any work no matter how simple as long as it is done well, honestly and diligently.

(Stevedore at Gen. Santos City Fishport Complex.

Pilipino: Kargador ng Gen. Santos City Fishport Complex)

Halloween Is Coming!

It seems like it was just yesterday that we were all busy preparing for our Halloween Children's Party at the office. Now, Halloween is just around the corner again and I am curious if we will still have the same party as what we had last year. It was so much fun putting up the Halloween decorations as we were trying to win the Best Halloween Decorated Department. It was also quite amazing to see the Halloween decorations made creatively by some of my co-workers.

I had more fun though with our Halloween Children's party as the kids came with their best Halloween costumes. The party was held at our training room which was decorated with beautiful Halloween decorations. Most of the decorations were made by hand by our creative co-workers.

These were the kids in their Halloween costumes while participating in the Halloween trick or treat games:
