Ruby Tuesday#56 Want A Drink?

It was a very hot day and I saw this guy juggling bottles of brandy to attract attention by the beach in Bluejaz Beach Resort. I think, their stall is already an attraction enough for its vibrant colors.

Rereading The Eclipse

Try as might, I can't help but get excited with the coming screening date of Eclipse. The third installment of the Twilight book series by Stephenie Meyer.

It's just unavoidable not to get excited when all I can see in the news everywhere are about the movie and its starts: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

In the States, people were camping out waiting for its premiere night last week but here in our city, the premiere night will happen this coming June 30.

I have started rereading the book even if I'm also midway in reading the online book of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, a book about one of the vampires out to kill the Cullens and Bella. I just want to recall the scenes before I watch the Eclipse movie.

Too Much Hype in Apple iPhone 4 and Droid X

The past few weeks had me seeing a lot of hype about Apple iPhone 4. A lot of people I know want iPhone 4. I dared to ask some about why they chose iPhone over another upcoming cellphone, Droid X. Surprisingly, a lot of them just did not know the features but only knew that it’s high-tech. Funny, really as it sounds like they’re just riding with the bandwagon. I wonder if they had read this.

Sometimes, too much hype creates unnecessary wants. Me thinks.

As for me, I can’t afford both phones right now. I might have to wait until iPhone 10 or Droid XYZZ to come or maybe not at all.

Litratong Pinoy# 101 Ang Pagbabalik(The Return)

Kim Hyun Joong In Cebu

Kim Hyun Joong is somewhere in Cebu right now. As what the rumors from the internet are circulating. A lot of fan accounts are coming out but I have yet to see a picture of him. Am actually curious why did he chose Cebu. Probably, somebody recommended the place to him (could it be his former TV wife, Hwang Bo? hehehe!)  Sure, Cebu has a lot to offer but I was expecting more like Boracay or Palawan as his choice. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see any pictures of him in Cebu.

It's interesting to know that even if it's his first time here in the Philippines (is it really first time?), he already donated one million pesos to

Are Chemotherapy Drugs Really Without Senior Citizen’s Discount?

Finally, I was able to get the needed vials of Oxaliplatin for my father. A helpful lady told me to try this little known pharmacy store near a hospital. Thankfully, they had stocks of Oxaliplatin when I got there. However, when I asked if I could avail of the senior citizen discount, I was told that it was already discounted and the discount is already unnecessary. Curious with the question, I asked what would the Oxaliplatin’s price be if I don’t ask for a senior citizen’s discount. The answer was it would be the same price. Imagine that.

The batch of Oxaliplatin I mentioned will be used for my father’s second chemotherapy session. The first batch was bought from his doctor. Similarly, when I asked for a senior citizen’s discount for the first batch, I was told that chemo drugs are without Senior Citizen’s Discount. I was about to argue that medicines no matter what kind are subject for the said account but my mother prevailed on me to stop.

How on earth are chemo drugs not included in the Senior Citizen’s Discount? To think, these drugs are quite expensive and only a few people can actually sustain buying it for several sessions without any help at all. My parents advised me to just let the issue pass but cancer treatments already cost an arm and a leg (no pun intended) with the cocktail of drugs needed to help treat the cancer patient. The Senior Citizen’s Discount would have been a big help.

I really hope the proper authorities will look into this. They will help a lot of cancer patients and their families if this issue will be addressed immediately.

Nursing Assistant

I am scouting for a private nursing assistant nowadays. I need one that will help my mother care for my father while I will be on a trip.

I wish my aunt were around. She is a registered nurse now but started out as a nursing assistant. She said, her decision in getting cna training was one of the best decisions she did in her life. She was having second thoughts about getting into nursing for a lot of reasons but was determined to get a job with good pay and better opportunities. Becoming a nursing assistant was a good step for her while she’s earning and evaluating her options. She was actually encouraging me to go the same path and check out CNAboard.

CNAboard is a good source of information for anything about certified nursing assistant. It has information about where to find the good schools with the best can training programs, where to find workplaces that offer better opportunities and even information about how to be a better certified nursing assistant. It’s really a helpful site to check.

June 30 Holiday It Is

Thankfully, the inauguration day of incoming President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III is a special nonworking holiday. June 30 is a holiday and it is a Wednesday. I would prefer it to be a Friday but Friday or not, there’s no work! I could sleep late and I could wake up late! Hallelujah!

Anyway, it will be interesting to watch the inauguration on TV. I wonder how both the outgoing and incoming presidents will feel about being in the same limousine going to the inaugural place. Probably, they would feel antsy and awkward but would still remain civil.

Interestingly, P-Noy as the incoming president prefers to be called, is the only single president in the Philippine history to be installed in Malacanang. All of his predecessors were married and this is why his sisters are taking part in a lot of activities to help him out.

There was an ongoing Math quiz contest when we passed by inside the elementary division of Ateneo de Davao. We watched for awhile and we were surprised how good the kids were. We tried answering some of the questions which were being announced by microphone. The kids were able to answer them correctly before we could. Awesome!

Not World Cup Crazy

World Cup 2010 has started and the frenzy that comes with it is escalating as days go by. The funny thing though, it’s very rare that I would see World Cup games on TV in houses and commercial establishments here. Filipinos are more NBA crazy than World Cup crazy especially now that the NBA finals are getting more intense.

Filipinos love basketball more than any other sports. Ironically, the average height of the Filipinos is usually the main hurdle of getting the worldwide spotlight. Sure, we can play well but going against those giants in international games are really too much for the height-deficient Pinoys. I wonder, if we should just shift to being World Cup crazy instead of NBA games crazy. We might have some chances of winning by emulating the World Cup players more than the ones in NBA.

In Search of Oxaliplatin

The first time my father had his chemotherapy session last month, I walked the streets until almost midnight looking for Oxaliplatin, one of the drugs he needed for his chemotherapy. I came up empty-handed so I turned to the phone directories that ended up with the same results. I googled with the same results too. I yahooed and yes, with the same results.

While I was walking anxiously in the streets at that time, I kept wondering about how can a cancer drug be unavailable from all pharmacies and drugstores, even Mercury Drug (considered as the largest drugstore in the Philippines) did not have it in stock.

By all indications, cancer stricken patients are increasing in numbers if I could based it on the people I know and on the survey results I’ve seen in the news. However, it seems that only a few people could get the cancer drugs. Because they are quite expensive (Oxaliplatin goes by almost P10,000 per 50 mg vial) and commonly unavailable from drugstores (as what I had experienced and as what was said by the drugstore staff/pharmacists), it is just no surprise that the number of cancer fatalities have increased over the years (with a lot of contribution of course from the unhealthy environment and lifestyles) even with the much-touted advances in medicine technology.

I wonder now what has the medical field have done so far to alleviate this. I wonder if the doctors ever get worried how their patients could take hold of those precious vials for their treatment. I wonder now until when would I walk the streets until midnight searching for Oxaliplatin.

For the sake of my father, I will have to. Again and again.

Ruby Tuesday#54 Film Shooting At Hongkong Disneyland

We were in Hongkong Disneyland when we saw the colorful balloons. They looked so pretty. They would have looked just that if not for the guys who were busy  with the electric fan trying to make the balloons move, it was really hilarious. When we saw the camera, we knew that there was a film shooting going on and we were walking right into it. Good thing, the director was still doing some instructions with his stars and I hurriedly took a photo of the stars which included a little girl.

Jovit Baldivino: The First Champion of Pilipinas Got Talent

Big things come in small packages. Jovit Baldivino is one small package with a lot of surprises up to his vocal chords. With vocal range similar to another powerful Filipino singer, Arnel Pineda of the American band, Journey, it's no surprise that he became the first champion of Pilipinas Got Talent this weekend.

I also liked his choice of songs. Not only they magnified his singing prowess but they also were my favorite songs from years ago. I especially like the audition song, Journey's Faithfully, the chosen song for the semi-finals that was Carrie and the amazing song of Queen, Too Much Love Will Kill You.

To the world, Jovit!! Congratulations!

Sunday Stealing#48 The Dark Side Meme

Today we ripped this meme off a blogger named Dana at the blog Amid Life's Questions. Today is a special meme. Dana explains why! "Let's see, this started out as Jay doing Savannah's “Questions” meme - a meme with a twist. This meme is constantly evolving - I answer the 10 questions that Jay posted and then post 10 questions of my own for anyone to answer on their blog or in comments. Jay asked some great questions - I couldn't resist the pull to the "dark side." So, in the same spirit, at Sunday Stealing we've added ten of our own questions! Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Litratong Pinoy#99 Pag-asa (Hope)

Hope is what makes things happen. Change as what promised by the new President of the Philippines, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino, can only happen if we have hope and if we all could help. If everybody will do good for the country  not just for personal happiness and gain.

On the 112th Philippine Independence day this June 12, let us all start the change that we need for  our Mother Country.

Ruby Tuesday#53 The First Filipino Saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz

Took this glass mosaic by the entrance door inside of San Juan Bautista at Calamba, Laguna. The mosaic is of the First Filipino saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz.

The church was where our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was baptized. It is just a stone's throw away from the house our national hero, Jose Rizal.

Source: http://www.laguna.net/jbilchurch/jubilee.html#calamba

In 1759 the Jesuit Missionaries purchased a big portion of land called Hacienda de San Juan, but the parish was established only in 1779 by the Franciscan Friars. In this church, Fray Rufino Collantes baptized our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, on June 22, 1861. the original altar was burned in 1862 but immediately rebuilt by Fray Leoncio Lopez. the first Filipino priest, Fr. Angel Villaruz, served this church for 43 years since 1901.

MTV Awards Shocker

Have you seen Tom Cruise dance? I haven't seen him jiggle on Oprah's couch while declaring profusely his love for Katie Holmes years ago. So, when I saw him dance during the MTV Awards with the dance diva, Jennifer Lopez, my jaw dropped. Oh boy, he can dance!!

Another shocker for that awards night was Sandra Bullock winning the Best Actress Award. No, that's not the shocker but it Bullock kissing Scarlett Johansson after finishing her acceptance speech. It's quite obvious too that Scarlett was shocked.

PhotoHunt#91 Sparkle(s)

Like rainbow beacons, they sparkled colorfully in the dark. I couldn't make out their shape as we got nearer the entrance of the cemetery. Definitely, their sparkle caught the attention of the kids passing by the roadside. When we got there, I stopped and that's when I saw that they were colorfully lighted toys for the Halloween :) The red ones were plastic horns on the headbands while the multi-colored sparkly long ones were plastic swords. I heard two kids begging their moms to buy some as we moved along.

Litratong Pinoy#98 Pagbabago (Change)

Somebody called me at work one morning. I was called laughingly as "Maria". There are just a few people who can call me that name. I was surprised. I was happy. It was because it has been more than two decades since I've seen him. I thought, he transferred to another planet but when he called, his voice was the same and I knew instantly that it was my high school classmate.

Pilipino: May tumawag sa akin isang umaga sa trabaho. Nakatawang tinawag akong "Maria".

There have been so many changes in our lives since we finished high school. We already have our own lives and dreams. When we decided to get-together after more than two decades, there were just a few changes that I can see from them. Whatever they achieved in their lives, my high school classmates stayed the same. It seems like nothing changed-we are still persistent, happy, smart and we treat each other like siblings. I was really happy when I saw them again. I hope we could get together again.

Kim Hyun Joong in Manila

Looks like Filipino fans of Kim Hyun Joong are in for a treat this month of June. The immensely popular leader of South Korean band, SS501, will be having a show in Araneta Coliseum on June 19, 2010 at 8pm. He will be performing with another South Korean group, B2ST.

Kim Hyun Joong became quite popular in the Philippines thru his role as Yoon Ji Hoo in Boys Over Flowers. He was already popular as the leader of SS501 but his quirky personality was noticed in the South Korean reality show, We Got Married. His funny and natural interaction with his partner, Hwang Bo Hye Jung led him to get the role of Ji Hoo in Boys Over Flowers.

Tickets for the show are at P7840, P6720, P4480, P3360, P1680 and P784.

Tickets available at all SM Ticketnet outlets and at the Araneta Coliseum. For ticket inquiries, please call (63) 02-9115555 or Viva Concerts and Events at (63) 02-6877236 and Abiertas House of Friendship at (63) 02-7243969.

Ruby Tuesday#52 Jose Rizal's Laguna Home

June is the birth month of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. So, am posting here a picture of his ancestral home in Laguna where he spent his childhood days with his siblings.

We visited this place last year and it was really interesting to see how he lived with his family. The Spanish-styled house was built the way it was typically done during the Spanish occupation with consideration to the tropical climate. The house has wide doors, high-ceiling windows to maximize air ventilation.
