I don't know the plant's name but its stripes made me stop and take its picture. On its background is the Transfiguration Chapel of Bukidnon. It was designed by the Philippine National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin.

Abuse Of Power

Sometimes, people forget their limitations. Sometimes, people forget that their positions in life don't mean that they can do anything what they want, that they can get away with doing wrong things (some are downright illogical things) just because they are deemed powerful. These kinds of people get on my nerve.Sure, I try to stay out of their way, but there are times that I can't avoid them. And so, I pray. I pray that their number in this world won't increase anymore; that life itself is difficult without them and to include them messing things more up can be too much. We need more people that are exactly the opposite of those who abuse their powers.  We need them to make our world a better place.

Litratong Pinoy#110 Publiko (Public)

I found it amusing to take pictures of newlyweds or soon-to-wed couples in Hongkong. They did it differently. They like to have their pictures taken in public places like the boat wharf...

Pilipino:
Napagkatuwaan kong manguha ng mga litrato ng mga ikakasal sa Hongkong. Ibang klase kasi silang magpalitrato para sa kasal. Gusto nila iyong nasa mga  publikong lugar gaya ng daungan ng barko...

Photobucket

At the parks...(Pilipino: Sa mga parke..)
Photobucket

In Tsim Sha Tsui which is a place where there were tourists from all over the world....
Pilipino: Sa Tsim Sha Tsui na dinadayo ng mga turista na galing pa sa kung saang sulok ng mundo...

Photobucket

Outside the church atop a mountain in Macau...
Pilipino: Sa labas ng isang simbahan na nasa itaas ng bundok sa Macau...
Photobucket

If they had their wedding photos taken in public places in the Philippines, somebody would surely tease, joke about it and would check it out. It was quite different for them, people don't mind them doing their thing in public places. Really different from Filipinos who are a bit shy and would rather prefer to have their wedding photos taken inside the studio. Filipinos like it quiet and private. Nowadays though, I've already seen some couples who had their wedding pictures taken outside the studio but not as many as the ones I had seen in Hongkong.

Pilipino:

Outdoor Wednesday#5 In the Middle of Nowhere

Photobucket

We passed by these tourists in the middle of nowhere on our way to the Mt. Pinatubo crater. They were lucky that they had two 4x4 trucks and each truck had a two-way radio to get in touch with the base camp.

Photobucket

Nowhere is this vast land of lahar country. I could not imagine getting stranded in the middle of it. Miles and miles of lahar and as far as you can see. It looked so surreal, to say the least. Our guide said that it has gotten better since Mt. Pinatubo erupted. The early days were the scariest as the ground was really hot from the volcanic ash and quite unstable during rainy days.

Nowadays though, Mt. Pinatubo is one of the crowd drawers in Luzon. People from all over the world visit its crater. It was actually worth the dustful travel I had to endure going to the crater.

Teacher's Day: Teacher Tonee

Today's the Teacher's Day and I can't help but recall the teachers I've had. They helped form my individuality and contributed a lot in my growth. I have such high respect for teachers because it's not only a difficult job to do but a noble task to form the minds of the people especially of the youth.

Let me talk about one of my favorite teachers, Sir Tonee.

Sir Tonee is part of the handful of individuals who influenced me during my young life. Primarily, our Math teacher in my third and fourth-year high school classes, he became our class adviser in my fourth year class.

We were a rowdy lot. A lot of our high school teachers found our class a challenge to handle. Not on the academic side of our school endeavors but more on the attitude aspect of it. We had an oversupply of smart-alecks in our class. I think, probably a combination of high intelligence-teen-age hormone overdrive did those.

Anyway, Sir Tonee gave what other teachers could not give. Challenges. While other teachers taught how to memorize, Sir Tonee did otherwise. He challenged us to stop and think, to analyze, to believe in ourselves, to seize the moment and to be happy with ourselves despite our shortcomings.

Math subject was not an easy subject to teach and more so, to learn but he made it easier for us. I didn’t know how he did it, but during those two years that he was my teacher, Math became one of my favorite subjects when I hated it the most prior to his class.

He also became our mentor. We were considered as the worst and the best batch in the school’s history. Worst for having the most numbers of problematic students (proof was the several occasions that police assistance was needed) but the best because a lot of these problematic students are quite smart and multi-talented. While other teachers gave up on our section, he encouraged us to become more active in other school activities like the school choir and dance group, to get into quiz bowl competitions and other activities that made us appreciate ourselves more.

More teachers came and went after I graduated from high school, but Sir Tonee remained one of my favorites. I saw him last December during our school reunion (the first ever that I had attended) and I was really happy to see that he remained the same even if his illness was making his life difficult.

I heard that he had just retired. The students of my school missed out on one very good teacher that could’ve influenced them positively.

Ruby Tuesday#68 Philippine Dolls

I saw these dolls wearing Philippine traditional clothes in a trade fair during Kadayawan Festival last August. I was quite tempted to buy a pair but I don't have any budget for them at that time.

I do hope though that on the next trade fair, I would be able to buy some of these dolls. Hopefully too, their skin tone and eye color will be closer to the real people who wear those traditional costumes.

Sunday Stealing#65 The Time Traveler Meme

Today we ripped this meme of a blogger known as Emily Barton, the Queen 'o Memes at Telecommuter Talk. We were lucky to find this meme. Emily actually wrote it herself (when do we find that? We'd guess maybe once a year.) We have told Emily that we stole it but we've already been given permission. Emily wrote, "Are you reading this? Then the Queen has tagged you. Get on with it." Thanks, Your Majesty! Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!
Cheers to all of us thieves!

Sunday Stealing: The Time Traveler Meme

Emily's Rules:

1. Depending on your age, go back 10, 15, 20, or even more years.
2. Tell us how many years back you have traveled and why.
3. Pretend you have met yourself during that era, and tell us where you are.
4. You only have one "date" with this former self.
5. Answer these questions.

Okay, as we start, what year is it and how old are you?
1987, I just graduated from college.

1. Would your younger self (YYS, from here) recognize you when you first meet?
Yes.

2. Would YYS be surprised to discover what you are doing job wise?
Oh yes, this job is not part of my plan.

3. What piece of fashion advice would you give YYS?
Keep to the basics, they'll never fail  you.

4. What do you think YYS is most going to want to know?
If I was able to fulfill my dreams.

5. How would you answer YYS's question?
I would her that some of the dreams I had were done and some are still work-in-progress.

6. What would probably be the best thing to tell YYS?
Life is full of surprises and promises. So, sit tight, have fun and enjoy.

7. What is something that you probably wouldn't tell YYS?
That it was not easy going through life but nothing's always easy anyway.

8. What do you think will most surprise YYS about you?
My job, probably.

9. What do you think will least surprise YYS?
That I'm doing well with work even if it was not part of the plan.

10. At this point in your life, would YYS like to run into "you" from the future?
I think so, yes.

Much Ado Over The Reproductive Health Bill

I can’t help but wonder why the church is fussing so much over the House Bill 96. The church is threatening civil disobedience and one bishop even threatened to excommunicate President Noynoy for his stance on giving the Filipino couples the choice to use contraceptives.

Recently, well-known Manila tour guide, Carlos Celdran, was arrested for disrupting a Catholic mass at the Manila Cathedral. He was protesting against the Church’s staunch negative stand against the passing of the RH bill.

There is so much fuss about the bill but can the Church help our neighbor, Helen, who has eight children because she said she can’t use contraceptives as the church is against it? Helen whose kids stopped going to school because her husband-jeepney driver can’t feed them all much more buy them their school needs.  How about another neighbor, Baby, whose teen-ager daughter got pregnant at the age of 14? You would’ve thought the teen learned her lesson after giving birth at such young age but she did it again at the age of 16. She said, she was afraid to use contraceptives because the Church forbade it but she conveniently forgot that it was also a sin to fornicate.

The thing is, the church is causing much ado against the Reproductive Health Bill but it’s really counterproductive to population control as well as poverty prevention. To use artificial contraceptives maybe considered as sin but to let a child into this world without giving them equal opportunity to live a good life, to get to good school, to eat 3 square meals a day, to have a roof over their head and to have clothes on their back can also be considered big sins.

Our population explosion is one of the highest worldwide, no thanks to the church’s stance against contraceptives, general ignorance of the sexually active Filipino homo sapiens and the male machismo mentality of the Filipino society.

If the church is raising much furor over a bill that would help arrest the population explosion, that could improve our national economy and also improve the lives of the future Filipino generations, where is now the separation of the Church and the State? Where is now the thrust of the church in helping its flock rise above poverty, ignorance and suffering?

Outdoor Wednesday#4 Geisha At Gap Farm

The place was always part of our school's field trip ages ago. GAP Farm has always been a part of my childhood days. I've had good memories of it. Its iconic "Land of Promise" sign was still there (what a relief!) and the ancient World War II Japanese Tunnel was still there.

GAP Farm is located at Brgy. Maa, Diversion Road, Davao City.

Here's one of the photos I took on the outdoor photoshoot we did this past Sunday at GAP Farm. Diane, our model, dressed up in kimono and really looked pretty while holding her umbrella.

I went on a photoshoot at GAP Farm last Sunday. The day's weather started nice and sunny but overcast skies rapidly took over and a slight drizzle even threatened our photoshoot. It was a good thing that we were able to do some photos of this model before the drizzle stopped us for a few minutes.

I called the model as Miss Pretty Red Riding Hood. She even carried a small basket covered with a red cloth:)

PhotoHunt#107 Natural

The Philippine eagle's natural habitat is rapidly dwindling. No thanks to man, their number decreased all through the years that they are now considered critically endangered.

The Philippine eagle is considered one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world. I have seen up close two of them during their feeding time and they can be really impressive but also quite intimidating at the same time.

The Philippine Eagle Center is home to these endangered Philippine eagles. A private, non-stock, non-profit organization, it exists mainly for the conservation not only of the Philippine eagle but also of other raptors in the Philippines and their natural habitat. To help sustain and defray their expenses, the Philippine Eagle Center accepts donations. Go here for more details.

Itchy Travel Feet

Am feeling the itch on my feet again. Not the athlete’s foot kind. But the kind that usually creates a hole in the pocket but usually the kind that always made me wonder about the world and always, made me feel so blessed.

The past months have been difficult for me, to say the least. Depression and loneliness would sometimes come in snatches. The issues at work didn’t help me anything and instead, added to my worries. Thank goodness for prayers, almost daily gym trips and keeping myself busy, I am coping. Yet, my itchy travel feet beckons.

Hwangbo Hye Jung: Getting Popular Internationally

Since watching the Ssangchu couple (Kim Hyun Joong and Hwangbo Hye Jung) in the South Korean reality show, We Got Married, last year, I have taken some interest on how the couple did after the show. Both have done really well, most specially Kim Hyun Joong who became more popular.

On the other hand, Hwangbo as she is popularly known, continued with her freelance work as commercial model, emcee, singer and philanthropist. She recently finished a fan meet with her Thai fans and she also did some charitable activities while there in Thailand. She was rumored to do more fan meets in other Asian countries some day. I do hope she’ll have another TV drama sometime soon like what Kim Hyun Joong in Playful Kiss is doing right now.

Of the two, I like Hwangbo more. Pretty but well-grounded, funny and silly but with a good head on her shoulder, I find her quite a positive model for women, old and alike.

Outdoor Wednesday#3 Walkway At Philippine Eagle Center

Walkways can be found inside the Philippine Eagle Center to facilitate the tours. There were names on the cement slabs of the walkway. Curious, I asked the tour guide about it. We were told that for a fee (at least P300), people can donate to the Philippine Eagle Center to help defray the upkeep and maintenance of the center. The amount they collect also helps in funding the research and breeding programs of the center for the eagles.

There Are More Funerals

Today, is my father's 40th day of death. I miss his presence. I pray that he is happy and at peace wherever he is now.

Nowadays, am feeling my age. Maybe even more. Slowly, gone are the days that I attend to a lot of baptismal/christening parties. Bridal shower parties and wedding receptions are even getting rarer. In fact, am attending more funerals now than I've ever did before. Funerals of people I know, people I care about.

Always, their deaths are painful reminders that we eventually lose people we care about through death, that life is too short and there's always an end. No matter how we try to control some things in our lives, there are things that we cannot control, one of which is death. To be frank, I get more scared now with the thought of death. Scared than I might lose the ones I love earlier than I expected and scared that I might have some things to regret. I can only pray, do better and do more hoping.

Sunday Stealing#63 The Threesome Meme

Today we ripped this meme from three people! The first eight questions were ripped from a blogger and blog called Foxymoron. She explains that she stole it from The Harridan. The second part of this meme was written by some blog buddies of ours since WTIT: The Blog first published in '06. Mr Lance from Solitary Views and Frank from Foxxfyrrer's Honk 'n' Holl'r! They decided to do a “two blogs meme” by asking each other 5 questions each. One question they actually never even asked! It was because Frank's mom reads his blog and apparently the question was a bit racy. (See the post by clicking here. It's full of funny schtick.) We left one question out since it was really asked twice. Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Rainy Season Is Here

The other day, the weather bureau announced that for the remaining days this month, there will be four more typhoons that will pass through the country. With the typhoons, more rainy days are to be expected. This week alone, we had rains on a daily basis.

Rainwaters may feed our earth but it also can become an inconvenience or can even be fatal to anyone. Floodings in some countries worldwide have caused a lot of fatalities. US Open Men’s Final was postponed for another day the other day because of the rains. (Thankfully, Nadal won over Djokovic.) The taxi driver I had yesterday was complaining about his car seats getting wet on the rainwater although I wonder why he had not installed rain guards to prevent that.

With the rainy days in mind, my mother has already hired somebody to do some house repairs for the rainy days. We cannot be too complacent as we have had some scary experiences from it. One particular incident comes to mind which happened years ago.

It rained continuously that day. It started on a late afternoon and continued well into the evening. We went to bed with the rains still pounding down our roofs. Sometime at around 2am, I woke up feeling cold. I heard a squishing noise and saw something floating in the dark. When I tried to step out of the bed to feel for my slippers, I hit water. Water that reached up to my knees and was about to reach the top of my bed. I shouted for my parents and brother. They woke up and was shocked to find the rising water. We scrambled to save some of our possessions and climbed up the doubledecked bed of my brother. We prayed for the waters to stop rising and sleep became elusive for all of us. Thankfully, the water did stop.

Anyway, I always have with me an umbrella in my bag nowadays. The weathers seem too erratic to expect a full dry day. I wonder if a cousin already bought the wind deflectors he had been planning to buy. It will be a good investment for him.

It's Clijsters As US Open 2010 Champion

Am not much of a fan of Kim Clijsters. Probably, because am a big fan of the Williams sisters. But this USA Open season, Clijsters proved once again that she got the balls of a champion even after retiring to start a family. To Kim, congratulations!

I do hope I can watch the US Open finals. I'll be on an overnight meeting and I'm worried I won't be able to see it. I wonder if there's some sort of US Open live streaming at the venue though. I might be able to take a peek.

PhotoHunt#105 Anniversary

It used to be just an anniversary celebration of the indigenous tribes' harvest season. However, the city saw its tourism potential and started to constitutionalize the celebration to attract not only the locals but also people from everywhere. In time, Kadayawan Festival became one of the most popular festivals in the country with its anniversary celebration being held every 3rd week of August.

More events were added almost every year but the Floral Float Parade is one of the two events that remained well-loved by everybody.

The other well-loved Kadayawan event is the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan (Dancing In the Streets).

Rain Concert In SM MOA

The other day, South Korean superstar Rain (Jung Ji Hoon) caused quite a disappointment to his Philippine fans for his non-appearance from a press conference. Rain is going to have a concert entitled "Intensity" this coming September 11 at SM Mall of Asia. He'll be with the South Korean K-Pop boy band U-Kiss.

I wish I can see this one. Not for Rain's singing but because of his dancing. He can dance up a storm! Rain is also shooting some scenes for his international movie, Fugitive here in the Philippines.

Outdoor Wednesday#1 Batad Rice Terraces

Photobucket

This is my first entry for Outdoor Wednesday. Photo was taken while we were traversing the Batad Rice Terraces. It was kind of scary trying to balance while walking on the side of the rice terraces. On my side are these green rice stalks, while on the other side is about 10-15 feet fall to another rice paddy.

Go here for more Outdoor Wednesday entries.

Ruby Tuesday#64 Giant Red Jeepney

Like Venus Williams in her red tennis dress in the US Open, it's not everyday that one sees a giant jeepney on the streets. More so, if it has a giant coke on its top.

Another holiday..yehey! Malacanang Palace finally announced that September 10, a Friday, is a non-working holiday. It is in observance of the end of the Feast of Ramadan or Eid'l Fitr. For an ordinary office employee like me, it will be an opportunity for me to catch up on my sleep debt.

So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft's thieves might take some time. It is a long meme and we shall do it in parts. Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

PhotoHunt#104 Hot

It was a hot day. The city streets were full of people and the dancer-participants were trying to be patient while waiting for their turn to perform. Not an easy task to do really considering that they were wearing some hot attire for their Kadayawan Festival's Indak-indak sa Kadayawan performance.

It's US Open

Yay! I can now watch the US Open fully on cable TV, not just some glimpses and thankfully, not just from youtube. I expect to watch my favorites Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams for a longer time. Hopefully, both will keep their games together to make it to the finals.

Michael Douglas And Throat Cancer

I remember my father upon reading the news about Michael Douglas and his throat cancer. Michael Douglas is really lucky that the cancer did not metastasized and stayed just right there on his throat. He has better survival percentage compared to my father. I wish him luck and I do hope that his cancer will disappear.

Getting The Wireless Router

I can be really clueless on things that are techie but when I learned from our computer technician that I can have wifi at home, my antenna went up immediately.

My nieces are starting to compete with my computer use due to their school assignments. While one is quite interested in doing the Facebook or even Friendster, both have been bugging me about their school assignments. So, the wifi connection at home is a solution. I actually thought it'll be an expensive gadget to buy but when I was told that it will just cost me below P2000, I got interested.

TP-Link was highly recommended by our computer technician and our system administrator. The TP-Link I bought was the TL-WR740N model. A combined wired/wireless network connection with 4-port switch with performance speed up to 150mbps. It was easy to install and its performance? It's doing good! Now, I won't have to wait for my nieces to finish up their assignments on computer before I can check my Facebook.
